Join us in celebrating Maryland Homegrown School Lunch Week!

Join us next week as we celebrate Maryland Homegrown School Lunch Week!  Sponsored by the Maryland Department of Agriculture and the Maryland State Board of Education, the Farm to School program works to bring more Maryland-grown products to school lunches with the aim of educating students about where their food comes from, how it is produced, and the benefits of a healthy diet.

What WTES is doing:

-2nd through 5th graders will provide WTES students with a “fun fact” about the type of local produce being served each morning via the morning announcements

- Table tents will be placed at each café table to inform students which local farms are supplying produce for the school lunch that day
-Bookmarks from the Department of Agriculture will be available for each student

-Healthy recipes that incorporate the local produce being served will be available

What you can do:

-We encourage students and parents to continue asking for fresh, local produce in school lunches!  You can learn more about Maryland Farm to School by exploring their website: http://www.mda.state.md.us/mdfarmtoschool/index.php

-If you are bringing a lunch from home, include something from a local farmer’s market.  This link will help you find one in your area:  http://www.mda.state.md.us/md_products/farmers_market_dir.php

-Read books about agriculture or how plants grow

- Cook a locally grown meal with your children

- Visit a farm/talk to a farmer

- Have older students calculate cost differences between transporting produce from California, Chile, Mexico vs. transporting produce from Aberdeen, MD.
